Back in 1981.... Helen the foundation owner started teaching her friend's children to swim from her uncovered home pool during the summer. Word got out and Helen’s School of Swimming blossomed from those humble beginnings.
In 1993 an innovative PVC-Canvas structure was erected over Helen's pool, changing rooms, a toilet and an on-site office were also added to make the facility available for use all-year-round.
In 1999 Helen's was purchased by Clinton Barnes who made a considerable financial investment in upgrading the swim school systems and facilities.
A second pool was opened at Northcote Primary School in 2001, which gave us access to a longer pool and more scope to provide lessons to the wider community. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement with the school. A substantial investment was made by Helen's to improve the facility and enclose the school pool for all year round use.
Towards the end of 2014 a third location was opened at Sunnynook Primary School providing the same mutually beneficial arrangements that were established at Northcote Primary.
In addition to our "on-site" teaching locations, the ‘Swimming for Schools’ programme was developed in 2003. The programme is designed for local primary schools to take full advantage, and make use of our experienced and professional swimming teachers at their own school pools. This way the cost of swimming lessons is kept far lower - per student - and expenses are reduced for schools and parents that would be otherwise incurred, like transporting students to other pool facilities and supervision etc.
Our General Manager and Director Tina Fraser has been a part of the Helen's team since 2004. Helen's has benefited from some very dedicated, knowledgeable managers and teachers over the years, who have contributed to it's success and development. They have also ensured that Helen's teaching methods and philosophy remain within our team culture. We take pride in providing an environment that is a welcoming, family-orientated, fun and well-structured.
Our focus is not only to teach children to swim. We are a team committed teaching life skills, ensuring our swimmers are safety conscious and have a healthy respect for all aquatic environments.
